On Sunday, January 23, 2022, Har Sinai Temple Sisterhood hosted a fascinating program about the Women of the Wall movement in Israel.
Our guest speaker was Cantor Tamar Havilio of Bet Shalom Congregation in Minnetonka, MN, who is also known as the “Cantor of the Kotel” from her many years of leading women in song in their monthly Rosh Chodesh services at the Western Wall (the Kotel).
Women of the Wall is a multi-denominational Jewish feminist organization based in Israel, with the purpose to secure women’s rights to pray together at the Western Wall — singing, reading, or chanting aloud from the Torah and wearing religious garments, like a Tallit and Tefillin.
During her fascinating presentation, Cantor Havilio shared her experiences — both uplifting and harrowing — leading these services in which the women were all too frequently met with vitriol, violence, and even arrest. We hope you will enjoy watching the recording of the hour-long program.
