Sisterhood Holds Annual Red Tent Shabbat

On October 29th, the women of Har Sinai Temple – our Sisterhood – held our annual Red Tent Shabbat.

This year, we volunteered with Rolling Harvest Food Rescue at Gravity Hill Farm in Titusville, NJ.

After harvesting radishes in the field, which would eventually go to a local food bank, we participated in a beautiful Shabbat morning service and enjoyed an Oneg of the most delicious desserts.

Sisterhood extends its thanks to Cathy Snyder, executive director of Rolling Harvest. We look forward to returning to the farm to help plant for our springtime Red Tent event!

Chair Yoga Class Fundraiser

On April 2nd, we held the first “TOGETHER FROM OUR CHAIRS, LET NO CUPBOARD BE BARE” Chair Yoga event led by “our” Lois Krause, certified Chair Yoga Instructor. Through the tremendous generosity of Har Sinai Temple members — and nonmembers — $2,550 was raised to support the outstanding work of World Central Kitchen (WCK). This nonprofit organization, founded by José Andrés, continues to provide millions of nourishing meals to Ukrainian refugees on the borders of Poland, Romania, and Moldova — as well as to those who are still in the war-torn cities and towns in Ukraine.

We are next offering a series of “TOGETHER FROM OUR CHAIRS, LET NO CUPBOARD BE BARE” Chair Yoga classes — a great opportunity to care for ourselves as we care for others.

6 classes for $36
ALL proceeds will support Mercer Street Friends Food Bank to address the serious issue of hunger and food insecurity sadly existing in our own community.

WHEN:
Saturdays, May 21 and 28, June 4 and 11
Sunday, June 26
10 to 11 a.m.

Women of the Wall

On Sunday, January 23, 2022, Har Sinai Temple Sisterhood hosted a fascinating program about the Women of the Wall movement in Israel.

Our guest speaker was Cantor Tamar Havilio of Bet Shalom Congregation in Minnetonka, MN, who is also known as the “Cantor of the Kotel” from her many years of leading women in song in their monthly Rosh Chodesh services at the Western Wall (the Kotel).

Women of the Wall is a multi-denominational Jewish feminist organization based in Israel, with the purpose to secure women’s rights to pray together at the Western Wall — singing, reading, or chanting aloud from the Torah and wearing religious garments, like a Tallit and Tefillin.

During her fascinating presentation, Cantor Havilio shared her experiences — both uplifting and harrowing — leading these services in which the women were all too frequently met with vitriol, violence, and even arrest.  We hope you will enjoy watching the recording of the hour-long program.

Should you be moved to support this just cause, please visit the URL: Women of the Wall – the Modern-Day Western Wall Liberators to make a monetary donation or purchase any of the items from their website symbolic of prayer.

Sisterhood Holds Annual Red Tent Shabbat

On September 25th, the women of Har Sinai Temple – our Sisterhood – held the annual Red Tent Shabbat.

Timed to coordinate with the festival of Sukkot and experienced within and around our handmade Sukkah adjacent to our Temple building. We kicked the event off with gentle Chair Yoga movements and stretches to clear the mind and open us up to the gift of Shabbat Shalom; followed by a modern morning service filled with music and melody, sounds and symbols of Sukkot, and meaningful prayer that united us ritual and spirit. We concluded with a tasty Oneg sponsored and prepared by our very own our resident musician and educator. A beautiful time was had by all, and we look forward to welcoming new members to our program in 2022.

Oseh Shalom
